COLD SUPPLY

Refrigeration and refrigeration systems are among the most technically complex devices in the HVAC industry.

Currently, there is no methodology for selecting the type of chiller that is optimal or universal for all applications.

When choosing a system and equipment, numerous factors must be taken into account, depending on the specific conditions of use. The cooling process used in modern refrigeration equipment is based on the continuous transfer of heat from the place to be cooled to another place, where this heat is released into the environment or utilised.

To ensure this pumping, the property of substances to “absorb” heat energy during evaporation (transition from liquid to gaseous state) and release it during condensation (reverse transition from gaseous to liquid state) is used.

The sources of artificial cold are the generation of cold by various refrigeration machines that consume electrical or thermal energy.

The substances that carry out this phase change in refrigeration machines are called refrigerants. The majority of refrigeration units produce cold by using the phase transition of refrigerants from liquid to gaseous state.

A refrigeration system from natural and artificial cold sources for air cooling should be designed if the meteorological conditions that are regulated cannot be provided by direct or indirect evaporative cooling units.

The choice of a cold source must be economically justified.

General exchange ventilation should be provided in the refrigeration plant room to remove excess heat.

The structural diagram of any refrigeration system consists of three main elements: a source of artificial cold, refrigeration pipelines of cold-consuming equipment.

Therefore, in the most general form, the classification of refrigeration systems for central air conditioners is carried out according to the following criteria: the principle of operation and location of the source, the type of transport system and type of coolant, and the type of cooling equipment.

According to the principle of operation, all known sources of artificial cold are divided into compression, absorption, thermoelectric and air.

Two types of systems are distinguished by the location of the source: centralised and local refrigeration. In the first case, refrigeration is supplied from a single source or a central refrigeration station, and in the second case, from individual refrigeration sources.

Two types of transport systems are distinguished by the type of transport system and the type of refrigerant: primary refrigerant transport systems and systems with intermediate refrigerant.

As for the cooling equipment of central air conditioners, there are systems with surface air coolers and contact devices for heat and humidity treatment. Surface air coolers, in turn, are divided by the type of coolant supplied into direct evaporation coolers (freon air coolers) and liquid coolers using an intermediate coolant (water or ethylene glycol mixtures).
